New People- New Places!

Many of us suffer when having to face new people, new situations, new relationships, new homes, new jobs, new schools, and ….well you get the idea!

“New,”  implies switching from something familiar and time tested to moving on to something NOT known, NOT tested, NOT reliable or sure. In other words, NEW implies we’re CHANGING to a new reality of some sort, and this terrifies many people.

Let’s stop this NOW.  Change is something we need to face with a smile. This is what life is all about and always has been!  ADAPT, EVOLVE or DIE!  From the moment we take our first breath of life, transitions are happening.  Actually, BEFORE we take our first breath of life (inside the womb) we are growing and developing  (definite change).  Change happens for either the better or the worst, all through life, and only ceases once we DIE.  So, I say, we EMBRACE this continual and dynamic process to get more joy and interest out of life.

No doubt, it is challenging taking on the “change” concept.  The reality continues in my life, as it does in yours, but it’s usually a very positive journey when I keep these 5 tips in mind and apply them. .
  1. EXAMINE:  Analyze and contemplate whether the upcoming change is really that big of a deal. If not, then drop it, and don’t fret.   If it is, then move on to step #2.
  2. PLAN: When I see a new element coming or it’s in my life with no warning, I make a point to PLAN how I’m going to incorporate it, the length of time I will daily experience it, and how to receive some relief from that change.  (Example:  Taking care of my niece and nephew for an entire week.  I would want to plan activities, down time, meals, and the official bedtime at Aunt Anna’s house).
  3. REFLECT: Identify all the benefits or points of learning you will derive from this new experience. (Example: I love them a ton and look forward to the opportunity to form a better and closer relationship with my niece and nephew).
  4. JOURNAL:  As you commence living and dealing with the big change in your life, write down what you did that worked, what didn’t work, and what you hope to gain and do at your next opportunity.  (Example: New Topic!  A new job!!  Training for the new job can be stressful and disheartening.  Try to remember all the positive feedback you receive during this time and write it down.  Then read it back to yourself over the next few days.  If no feedback is given daily, then you’re going to have to be honest and observant with yourself and acknowledge your positives. Don’t be stingy about it either!
  5. GATHER OTHERS AROUND YOU!  Gather those people who are closest as you deal with unique situations.  If it is a new job, go to lunch with a buddy to share your experiences. Are you new to motherhood or being a single parent or do you want to travel but are afraid of new places and how you will maneuver them? Whatever your NEW situation, gather your friends around you for moral support.
Transitions and times of change make us wiser and richer human beings, IF we allow it.  I’m urging you to take on change with an enthusiasm and joy! Take these opportunities to grow,  in discipline, generosity and life perspective.  Change can be a great GOOD, even if you don’t see the GOOD right away.  Enjoy your journey!
